Healthy Steps Challenge

What is the Healthy Steps Challenge?

The Healthy Steps Challenge (HSC) is a ten week team/incentive based physical activity worksite intervention. This intervention is based on the Take Charge Challenge , piloted by the National Coalition for Promoting Physical Activity NCPPA in 38 sites nationally in the spring of 1998 when it was called “March into May.” It was adapted from the CDC Director’s 50th Anniversary Physical Activity Challenge (1996). This intervention is intended as an individual, organizational, and community behavior change program.

How does it work?

Participants set a ten-week goal based on a point system where one point represents 10 minutes of moderate/vigorous physical activity. Participants are eligible for incentives for sign up, five-week point goal achievement and ten-week point goal achievement. Teams are established within the organizational structure of the worksite. Team captains are eligible for incentives for enrolling at least fifty percent of organizational units and having seventy-five percent reach their respective goals. The program is evaluated by monitoring physical activity stage of change movement.

What does it cost?

The successful implementation of ten-week HSC requires the following internal resources:
. Top management personal participation and promotional support
. Manpower time commitment for ten weeks
        . Worksite director
. Health promotion committee (ten hours)
. Team captain for every 25 employees (eight hours)
. Accumulation and distribution of incentives
    . Data Collection

What are the goals of the program?

HSC attempts to increase individual behavior through organizational change. Individual behavior change is measured with a before and after survey - “Stages of Change”. Organizational behavior is measured by percentage of organization that participates and reaches their respective goals.
