Have you ever wondered how to find a community service when you or someone you know needs help? The first step in finding help is to know whom to call. You know to dial 9-1-1 for emergencies and 4-1-1 for directory assistance. Now, one can dial 2-1-1 for community services, or 264-4636 on your cell phone.

2-1-1 has been approved nationally by Congress and statewide in Alabama as a single, consistent three-digit number to be used as a source of information regarding community services. 2-1-1 is efficient, eliminates confusion, and connects people to agencies and organizations near them that can make a difference.

People can grow more self-reliant through easy access to a network of community resources. 2-1-1 serves a vulnerable population-people that often slip through the cracks.

Over the past two years The Volunteer and Information Center (VIC) and the River Region United Way worked together to establish a single easily identifiable three-digit number to link people with resources: 2-1-1 Connects.

  • 2-1-1 Connects is the first building block in establishing 2-1-1 statewide in Alabama and serves as a model for other call centers.
  • 2-1-1 Connects is a community information and referral number that builds on an existing infrastructure and has been established by VIC, an agency with 30 years of experience in dealing with community services.
  • 2-1-1 Connects can help one locate a variety of human services, including: counseling, emergency shelter, health services, job training, domestic or substance abuse information and support services, child and elder care services, education, recreation and volunteer opportunities and much more.
